In 1973, Motorola was the first company to make a handheld mobile phone. On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive, made the first cell phone call from a handheld mobile phone. He called his friend Dr. Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs. The first handheld cell phone used by Dr. Cooper weighed around 2.5 pounds and measured 23 cm long, 13 cm deep and 4.45 cm wide. This cell phone had to charge for 10 hours but could only be talked on for 30 minutes before needing to charge again.
The cell phones of today have only been around for the last 20 years.
The early cell phones are called 0G mobile phones, or Zero Generation cell phones. Most phones today rely on 3G or 4G mobile technology. The newest technology is LTE, or Long Term Evolution for high speed.
